@Twelvebit: For many of my black and whites I use NIK Color Efex Pro 2.0 and use the B&W tonal enhancement filter. For me it gives the richest blacks and nicest gray tones. Sometimes I have to do some burning in with parts of the image prior to the conversion though. Just depends.
